Netball in Singapore: Programmes, Academies & Where to Play

Netball is one of the most widely played team sports for girls in Singapore schools, with inter-school competition running from primary level upwards. That makes it unusual among youth sports here: most players meet the game through their school CCA rather than through a club, and the school season sets the rhythm of the year.

The gap that leaves is court time outside school. A player who wants to start before her CCA does, keep sharp between seasons, or simply play for fun without selection pressure has fewer obvious options. That is the gap structured academy programmes are built to fill.

How the Game Works

Netball is played seven a side on a court divided into thirds. Each position is restricted to certain thirds, so the game rewards timing and positioning rather than end to end running with the ball.

The rules that surprise newcomers most are the ones about movement. You cannot dribble, and you cannot run with the ball: once you catch it, the foot you landed on is planted, and you have three seconds to pass or shoot. Only the two attacking positions may shoot, and only from inside the shooting circle. Defenders must stay three feet away from the player with the ball.

The seven positions are Goal Shooter, Goal Attack, Wing Attack, Centre, Wing Defence, Goal Defence and Goal Keeper. Beginners are often moved around several of them before settling, which is a good thing: understanding how the whole court connects is more useful early on than specialising.

What a Player Needs to Start

• Court shoes with good grip and lateral support. Netball involves sharp stopping and pivoting.
• Comfortable, fitted sportswear that allows a full overhead reach.
• Water, given the humidity, even in an indoor hall.
• Short nails and no jewellery, which are standard safety checks in most sessions.

No ball or bib is needed to begin. Programmes supply their own.

Netball at Super Arena

Netball at Super Arena is run with The Singapore Netball Academy, which has been operational since September 2015 and was established with the vision of nurturing a passion for netball among young girls in Singapore. The academy aims to give players the opportunity to learn and develop their skills and knowledge in the game.

Its reason for existing speaks directly to the gap described above. Netball is a competitive sport in Singapore schools, and many players do not get many opportunities to play recreationally or competitively outside that setting. The academy strives to provide those opportunities, so that players continue to play and love the game for life.

Programmes and Age Groups

The academy runs three programmes, each on a ten session block of two hours.

U6 is developed for children aged 5 to 6 and is about fundamentals rather than netball specifically. It gives a child the underlying skills they need to play any ball sport: catching, tracking a moving ball, changing direction, and sharing space with other children.

U8 is developed for ages 7 to 8 and is where the game itself is introduced, through modified games and activities that build ball handling and footwork. Making friends and beginning to enjoy the sport matter as much here as technique.

The Afterschool Netball Program is a mixed age group for players aged 7 to 12, open to all levels, covering the basics of netball alongside agility, team play and game understanding. Players train according to their age and skill level, so a beginner and a school team player are not held to the same expectations in the same session.

Choosing a Programme

Match the programme to where your child actually is, not to her age alone.

If she has not played a structured team sport before, start with the age appropriate entry programme even if she is at the top of the bracket. The fundamentals carry across every sport she might try later, and a confident start matters more than a fast one.

If she already plays for her school, the mixed afterschool group is usually the better fit. It gives court time and game understanding outside the school season without adding selection pressure, which is often exactly what a player needs to keep enjoying the game.

If you are unsure whether netball will suit her at all, note that the skills in the early programmes are deliberately transferable. A child who tries netball and moves to basketball or another court sport does not waste the term.

Getting Started

A ten session block is a real commitment of time and money, so it is worth asking a few questions before booking: what the coach to player ratio is, how players are grouped within a mixed session, and what happens if you miss a week.

Beyond that, the useful thing is simply to turn up. Netball is a sport that reads as complicated from the sideline and becomes obvious once you are on court with a bib on.
