Pickleball Court Dimensions & Setup

A pickleball court measures 20 feet wide by 44 feet long (6.10m x 13.41m) for both singles and doubles. The net stands 36 inches high at the sidelines and 34 inches at the centre. A 7-foot non-volley zone, the “kitchen,” sits on each side of the net. The total play area is identical to a doubles badminton court.

What are the official pickleball court dimensions?

Every standard pickleball court follows the same footprint, whether you are playing a casual rally or a sanctioned tournament. The playing surface is 20 ft x 44 ft (6.10m x 13.41m), and crucially this size does not change between singles and doubles play, unlike tennis.

Beyond the lines, you also need run-off space. The recommended total court area is 30 ft x 60 ft (9.14m x 18.29m), giving players room to move safely behind the baseline and beside the sidelines. Indoor venues in Singapore often allow a little extra ceiling clearance too, ideally 18-20 ft, so high lobs are not interrupted.

The kitchen: pickleball’s non-volley zone

The non-volley zone, universally nicknamed the “kitchen,” is the 7-foot strip on each side of the net, running the full 20-foot width of the court. You cannot volley the ball (hit it out of the air) while standing inside this zone or touching its lines. Your momentum also cannot carry you into the kitchen after a volley.

The kitchen exists to stop players from camping at the net and smashing every ball downward. It forces dink rallies and softer, more tactical play, which is a big reason pickleball is so beginner-friendly. The kitchen line, 7 feet from the net, is treated as part of the zone, so stepping on it counts as a fault.

Net height and the service lines

The net is the one element that is not a flat height. It is hung at 36 inches at the posts and pulled down to 34 inches at the centre by a centre strap. That 2-inch dip rewards players who target the middle of the court.

The centreline divides each service area into right and left service courts. To serve legally, you stand behind the baseline and hit diagonally cross-court, clearing the kitchen and landing in the opposite service box. The service areas measure 15 ft deep by 10 ft wide each. There are no doubles “alleys” as in tennis, the sidelines are the same for every format.

Reading the court: a diagram in words

Picture standing at one baseline looking across the net:

  1. Directly in front of you is the baseline, the back boundary 22 ft from the net.
  2. Running away from you on both edges are the two sidelines, 20 ft apart.
  3. A centreline splits your half lengthwise into a left and right service court, but it stops 7 ft short of the net.
  4. Where the centreline stops, the non-volley (kitchen) line runs across the full width, 7 ft from the net.
  5. The net bisects the whole rectangle, higher at the edges than the middle.

Mirror that layout on the far side and you have a complete court.

How to convert a badminton or tennis court

Pickleball shares its outer dimensions with badminton, which makes conversions straightforward, a real advantage in space-tight Singapore where multi-use halls are common.

From a badminton court: A doubles badminton court is already 20 ft x 44 ft, an exact match. The main job is the net. Badminton nets sit at 5 ft, far too high, so you lower or swap to a pickleball net at 34-36 in. Then add the kitchen lines 7 ft from the net and the centreline if they are not already marked. Many HDB community halls and CCs reuse badminton markings with temporary tape.

From a tennis court: A tennis court is much larger (78 ft x 27 ft for singles), so you can fit pickleball courts inside it. Use portable nets and floor tape to lay out one or more 20 x 44 ft courts. A standard tennis court can usually accommodate up to four pickleball courts, or one court with generous run-off. Blended lines in a contrasting colour help players ignore the tennis markings.

For a quick conversion you only need three things: a regulation net, a tape measure, and 2-inch line tape. Indoor multi-sport venues such as Super Arena at 321 Clementi Ave 3 are purpose-set for this kind of fast court turnover, letting badminton and pickliers share the same floor across a day.

Quick setup checklist

  • Measure and tape a 20 x 44 ft rectangle.
  • Mark sidelines, baselines, centreline, and the kitchen line 7 ft from the net.
  • Set the net to 36 in at posts, 34 in at centre.
  • Keep all lines 2 in wide in a contrasting colour.
  • Allow run-off space toward a 30 x 60 ft footprint where possible.

With these numbers locked in, any badminton hall or tennis court in Singapore can become a regulation pickleball court in minutes.

Common questions

What are the dimensions of a pickleball court?

A pickleball court is 20 feet wide by 44 feet long (6.10m x 13.41m). This size is the same for both singles and doubles play. The recommended total area, including run-off space, is 30 ft x 60 ft.

How high is a pickleball net?

A pickleball net is 36 inches (0.914m) high at the sidelines and 34 inches (0.864m) at the centre. The centre is pulled down by a strap, creating a slight dip that rewards shots aimed at the middle.

What is the kitchen in pickleball?

The kitchen is the non-volley zone, a 7-foot strip on each side of the net spanning the full width of the court. You cannot volley the ball while standing in it or touching its line, which encourages softer, more tactical play.

Can you turn a badminton court into a pickleball court?

Yes, easily. A doubles badminton court is already 20 ft x 44 ft, an exact match for pickleball. You only need to lower the net to 34-36 inches and add the kitchen and centreline markings with tape.

How many pickleball courts fit on a tennis court?

A standard tennis court (78 ft x 27 ft) can typically fit up to four pickleball courts using portable nets and floor tape, or one court with generous run-off space around it.

Is a singles pickleball court smaller than a doubles court?

No. Unlike tennis, the pickleball court is the same size (20 ft x 44 ft) for both singles and doubles. There are no separate alleys, so the sidelines stay identical for every format.
